Museum Memories: Tour of the CSMVS

As keeper of our collective memory and histories, and a space of joy and inspiration, Mumbai’s premier museum is without rival. Take an interpretive tour of the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India) or CSMVS to encounter, explore and critically engage with the stories and secrets hidden within, behind and around the highlights on display! From prehistoric stone tools to ancient inscriptions of monumental significance, powerful relief carvings from a faraway land, sculptures that illustrate the development of Indian figurative art, miniature paintings that speak of political aspiration and resistance beyond style and subject, textiles, coins and weapons, the CSMVS has it all.

Also, discover the features and meanings behind the museum’s iconic design and its institutional history, placing its story within the larger development of Indian museums and the building of Bombay’s city centre in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This highlights tour enables participants to enjoy a space and collection that can feel dense, even overwhelming, to explore on their own.

The tour will begin outside the museum building with an interactive discussion placing the museum’s history within the wider story of the building of Bombay in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. We will also position the CSMVS within the development of Indian museums in the 19th and 20th centuries and highlight the politics of this history.

We will explore the unique features of and meanings behind the museum’s iconic Indo-Saracenic structure, today located at the heart of Mumbai’s premier heritage precinct and cultural district.

Once inside the museum, we will focus our attention on a range of highlight objects on display. Participants will be encouraged to read these objects and interpret the meanings and memories they hold. The tour leader will go beyond the visual and descriptive to weave the larger stories behind and around what participants can see. Using their imagination, what they see, and the questions and cues provided, participants will be able to build fascinating links between objects, collections, places and histories.

Taking from the tour leader’s experience of working in museums the tour will also spotlight curatorial and design strategies, and provide insights into the working of the museum, its challenges, many achievements and varied programming.
